(COlsen@mchsi.com)

Chris Olsen taught mathematics at George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, IA, for over 25 years.   His teaching load typically included Advanced Placement* Statistics and Advanced Placement calculus, precalculus, and an assortment of other classes. He is now teaching at Grinell College in Grinell, IA. He graduated from Iowa State University majoring in mathematics and philosophy, and in his graduate work concentrated on statistics, computer programming, and psychometrics and test development.

He has been involved nationally in workshops and conferences mostly relating to statistics for almost 20 years. He was the Iowa recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching in 1986, Regional Awardee of the IBM Computer Teacher of the Year award in 1988, and a recipient of the 1999 Siemens Award for Advanced  Placement* in mathematics. He is a frequent contributor to the AP* Statistics listserv, and has reviewed materials for The Mathematics teacher, the AP* Central web site, The American Statistician, and the Journal of the American Statistical Association. He currently writes a column for Stats magazine. He is a co-author, with Roxy Peck and Jay Devore, of the Introduction to Statistics and Data Analysis, published by Duxbury Press.

He is a past member (twice) of the AP* Statistics Test Development Committee, and has been a table leader and question leader at the AP* Statistics reading for 12 years.  Since the summer of 1996 has presented numerous workshops in AP* Statistics in the United States and internationally.

Course Description:

This course will focus on best practices for helping students master the essential concepts and methods of AP* Statistics.  We will share resources for assessment, technology, projects, and AP* exam preparation.  In addition, we will examine issues related to organizing and administering the course, such as student selection, pacing, and sequencing.

In this unique dual-session format, Daren will be the primary workshop leader for the New teachers and Chris will be the major guru for the Experienced teachers.  However, New and Experienced participants will interact with both presenters and with each other at various times throughout the week.  See the schedule below for more details. For this workshop, select "New" only if you have not taught the AP Statistics course before.
