Sandra Maciel Franco, retired Spanish teacher and Modern Languages Department Chair at University High School in Tucson, Arizona, has taught for more than 30 years.  She taught Migrant Education and French at the elementary level, and Spanish language and literature at the high school and college level. She taught AP* Spanish Language for 21 years and AP* Spanish Literature for 18 years. She earned a BS in Secondary Education from Central Michigan University, with a major in Spanish and a minor in French; and a MA in Spanish Literature from Brigham Young University.

Her teaching position at the high school level included membership in the University High School Site-based Organization and Instructional Council, and the North Central Accreditation Committee. She also served as the National Spanish Exam Coordinator for the Tucson area. She is currently a reader and a consultant for the College Board. 

She received the Scarlet and Gray Certificate of Commendation in 1998-99, Who's Who Among American Teachers in 1999, One of the Best Foreign Language Teachers award at the 2002 University of Arizona Second Language Teacher's Symposium, the National Society of High School Scholars’ Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004, and “Exemplary AP* Teacher” from the College Board in 2006.


Description for AP Spanish Literature

This workshop will cover the structure of the AP* Spanish Literature Exam:  reading comprehension of the required reading list, poetry analysis, literary vocabulary, and essay writing.  Discussions will include class curriculum and the school support needed to create and maintain a strong AP* Spanish program. Successful strategies and teaching methods for different types of students (native speakers, non-native speakers, large or small classes) will be addressed, as well as those student skills that need to be reinforced on a regular basis.

Time will be devoted to analyzing and reviewing sample texts, and detailed information regarding the grading system will be given. Format changes in the current exam and implications regarding course curriculum modifications will be presented.
 
Participants will be asked to actively participate and share best practices with the entire group.  Participants should bring one successful activity/lesson to share with the rest of the group.
